The 854-080FT flange is manufactured from Type 1, Cell Classification 12454-B rigid PVC compound (Schedule 80), which meets the standard ASTM D‑1784 for rigid PVC compounds and chlorinated PVC (CPVC) compounds. Its body is designed as a Van-Stone or loose-ring style flange: this means the hub is welded or solvent-fused to the pipe, and the flange ring (with bolt-holes) fits over the hub and is free to rotate. During installation, the hub remains fixed, and the ring can be rotated to align bolt holes easily without rotating the pipe run or attached equipment. This feature simplifies alignment in tight or constrained systems. Because the flange is Schedule 80 PVC and rated at 150 psi (at ambient temperature, 73°F) for liquids, it is suited for many moderate-pressure applications. The loose-ring design also permits disassembly or equipment changes (for example, servicing a pump or filter) without disturbing the piping alignment significantly. The integrated FiberTuff ring (indicated by the “FT” suffix) adds a level of reinforcement or alternative ring-material finish to improve durability and possibly improve external abrasion/fatigue resistance in the face of handling or service conditions. The manufacturer calls attention to this “FiberTuff” ring benefit in its literature.

The flange ring’s bolt-circle and bolt-hole pattern are conforming to ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt-pattern for that size, so compatibility with standard equipment flanges is maintained. Installation should follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for flange assembly: correct gasket material (typically full-face elastomeric gasket, ~1/8″ thick, Shore A hardness 50-70) must be used, bolts inserted and torqued in a star/diagonal sequence to avoid uneven stress, and pipe & flange support must eliminate bending stresses.

The slip-on hub (socket) style allows the pipe to be solvent-welded into the hub, providing a strong, leak-tight joint typical of PVC systems. The ring, separate from the hub, allows for easier maintenance operations by making bolt alignment simpler. Because the flange is of plastic construction, it offers advantages of corrosion resistance (e.g., for water‐based or chemical service where compatible) and lighter weight compared to metallic flanges.

However, the manufacturer clearly warns: this type of PVC flange must not be used for compressed air or gas service (or high-pressure gaseous systems) because of risk of explosive failure.
